(Worth noting that this is the 100th anniversary of the miners strike of 1912 that saw the start of the labour movement in NZ).
There are several places in Waihi for afternoon tea.
If anyone is keen to have a drive, Waihi is home to SS10 of the recent Targa Bambina Rally. It’s a nice drive & runs from the middle of the gorge to the back of Waihi, about 13k’s in total. The road you’re looking for is Waitekauri Road & it ambles along the bottom of the hills, good cambered bends, but bear in mind some have limited visibility as well, & you are in a rural area.
ACCOMMODATION AT MT MAUNGANUI SATURDAY 28TH APRIL 2012:
Calais Mount Resort = Saturday night, room prices have been given to us at a group corporate rate, (thank you Coomzie for his contacts), so it's very important when you phone to say you're with the "Z Club", to obtain the special prices and the booked rooms they've reserved for us. It's up to you whether you stay just the Saturday night, or the Sunday too and make a long weekend of it.
Please ensure you have your credit card at the ready to secure your booking. You are responsible for payment of your room bill.
Will probably just come down to Waihi for morning tea.
We have had good coffee and home cooking at a place called Quartz Cafe, on the main street.
Their savoury muffins are yum.
Jibber has something else in mind, I think, involves a nice road to get there too. _________________ Next - Z Club events 2013:

Don't forget to book your accommodation at the hotel (details in the first post). To secure the special corporate rate, please mention you're with the Z Club!!!
The rest of the details for this weekend are being finalised.
We should be there. I lived in Waihi for a while and personally loved Waitawheta Rd for blowing out the cobwebs and dust if you wound down all your windows. See wises maps. Waitekauri Rd is another great drive up to the mine and back. _________________ All Nissans are racecars.

The very last bit of Golden Cross Road is gravel, unless that's changed in the last 11 months (not come in from that side, hiked in from Coromandel side). The view from the old slurry lake is great, as long as it's clear, often quite windy. Some massive perfectly round boulders by the lake too. Is totally man made lake basically perched on the side of the hill. Quite amazing the restoration of a former mining area. [thumbs up] _________________ Next - Z Club events 2013:

As far as I'm aware it is. Around the lake bit, there are usually sheep grazing, but there are styles over most of the fences. Can be approached from either side. _________________ Next - Z Club events 2013:
